White Girl Wasted On A Wednesday?!

Wednesday, January 21st, 2015, I attended Murderland Collective’s White Girl Wasted Wednesdays: Next 2015 at Kryptonite in Houston, Texas. I have been a longtime supporter of this event, attending since it first started. Thus, I thought it was about time to share this underground gem to the world. Murderland Collective (#bassilluminati) is an eclectic collective of DJ’s, MC’s , visual & multimedia artists, and promoters “down to move bodies and rock parties.” The head of Murderland Collective, Eric Dean, describes this event as “the voice to the underground Bass DJ and recognized as the leader in breaking new sounds, talent and ideas.” I have attended this event in several other venues, as well. However, Kryptonite does the best job in supporting this event. This past Wednesday’s event was to celebrate four new DJ additions to the Murderland Collective team: Austin Enriquez & Buddy Kenjura (SMTH & WSSN), Weston Chauvin (BRKLW) , Eamon Eaves (E-Rush), and Mike Aya. In addition to new DJs, Murderland Collective gained a new manager and event coordinator, Julian Palm!

First up on the decks from the new DJ additions was Eamon Eaves, also known as E-Rush. I was very impressed with his set and song selection. Also, I could see why he had been added as a new addition based on his talent for scratching. Scratching is one of the main ways to measure a DJ’s skills and, by the sound of it, he was excelling! I was delighted by his heavy trap remix of Flight Facilities’ “Crave You.” Up next on the stage was trap duo SMTH & WSSN. Although they are fairly new to the local bass scene, they have already produced banging remixes to songs such as 3LAU!’s “How You Love Me,” and my personal favorite, “Hero” by Pegboard Nerds. Following SMTH & WSSN, Brklw (pronounced “Bear-claw”) stayed true to his name with his roaring bass lines and set featuring trap, moombahton, twerk, and bounce. He just released his official EP entitled “BRKLW,” which features his all-original tracks “Bounc3,” “W3T,” and “Y34HO3.” Last, but not least, Mike Aya closed up the main stage. This artist is not a rookie when it comes to the local Houston DJ scene, as he is well known for his electro, house, Top 40, dubstep, and hip-hop style. The beautiful dance and performance-centric troupe, The Alphas, are the dance division of the local Houston crew called “The Original Alpha’s!” They complimented the event well with their LED-hooping flows and the unique, fierce dance styles that each “wolf” provided.

Overall, this event continues to prove itself a success every week, as Eric Dean provides Houston with different flavors and themes of the local Houston bass scene. He keeps Houston up to date with the fresh styles of bass through a weekly event, which is one of the most difficult re-occurring events to pull off without getting boring. Bass-head and hip-hop connoisseurs should definitely stop by Kryptonite on a Wednesday to check this event out. In addition to White Girl Wasted Wednesdays, Eric Dean hosts a monthly event called #AutomaticClassic at Notsuoh that combines indie rock, hip-hop, and EDM and has collaborated with Buda Love Presents and Kryptonite to introduce a new weekly that you can check every Friday night. Please feel free to leave a comment with your experiences at this event and share with your friends to support Houston locals!
