He’s getting a lot of love on the Mr.Suicide Sheep’s YouTube channel. According to his Twitter, he’s “somewhere in Texas.” If you don’t know of daydreamer, you will soon. Back in June, his EP Senses was released to an eager audience and soon shot to #7 among the Top Albums sold on iTunes, which is amazing for a relatively new producer.
Erica June is the artist behind the eye-catching cover and single art for Senses. You can also find her work on Tumblr. Now before you go browsing, I have to note that while beautiful, a few images that appear on the Tumblr may not be safe for your work, so proceed with some discretion in the event your work place for whatever reason doesn’t care for tasteful illustrated nudity. I personally don’t have a problem with it, but I don’t want anyone getting the side eye for trying to check out a wonderful artist’s work. But back to daydreamer….
Every time I am turned on to a new artist, I check out all of the artist’s social media channels. Here is what I learned from Twitter:
1) daydreamer is a fan of Pokémon and a Pokémon Go player
2) daydreamer is a dog person
3) daydreamer has a unique sense of humor
Twitter also reveals a few music influences, like Charli XCX, Justice, Knife Party, The Avalanches, and Maggie Rogers. I was relieved to see that he also liked Taylor Swift and Rihanna. I have lost count of the artists I’ve researched who turn their noses up at popular music, but it would appear that daydreamer has eclectic tastes. It makes him relatable. Reading of his journey through music production does as well, as I’m sure many producers who may be reading this can identify with experimenting and trying to get somewhere with a track.
The stand out track for me on the EP is “Travelling Light.” The track starts off light enough, but by the 4:24 mark launches full speed into what you think is going to be a powerful drop, only to be let down back into the most graceful of notes. “Swoon” is the runner up, keeping things upbeat as it goes along. All six tracks on this EP can be purchased on iTunes or streamed on Spotify.
Glancing through his Soundcloud, I came to the conclusion that he and his music are right on the money. Besides his EP Senses, there are other treats to be found on daydreamer’s Soundcloud, such as his remix of Madeon’s “Innocence” ft. Aquilo. For a free download of this remix, go here.
If you’re yearning for the winter, give daydreamer’s take on a familiar Christmas song of yore a spin. He took a classic and put a laidback, finger snapping spin on it. I mean, who does this? Someone who knows what the hell they are doing, that’s who.
I never cease to be impressed by the new crop of music producers, many of whom are very young and grew up on music that was once uncool for those of us who were ostracized for liking it. daydreamer’s music is at the forefront of a wave of change in the industry but his words ring in my ears as much as my music.
People like daydreamer motivate me to keep searching for how I work best and to highlight my strengths. Senses has been on repeat since I discovered it and has fueled many writing sessions. Follow daydreamer into sonic awareness on Facebook, Soundcloud, Twitter, Tumblr, and Instagram.
I was listening to electronic dance music without even knowing it when I was listening to Jock Jams in the 90s. Fast forward to my senior year in high school and I had discovered Fatboy Slim. I have been listening to edm ever since and love writing about new sounds, good sounds, and the music that makes us move.
