Right On The Money: A Review of Tuesday Maybe

0

Way Out West, comprised of English duo Jody Wisternoff and Nick Warren, released their latest album “Tuesday Maybe” in mid-June 2017 for Anjunadeep after an arduous eight years in the making. Both artists have an impactful reputation in their own standing, and have an impressive 25 years of success under their belts as a pair. Known for hits such as “Blue”, “Domination”, and “The Gift”, Way Out West has a loyal following and are one of the leading influences in EDM.

“Tuesday Maybe” is yet another superlative collection of tracks, featuring a harmonious integration of classical instrumental sounds within the elements of trance and progressive house that fans have come to expect. The album opens with “Running Away”, a melodic, piano laced track with the soothing vocals of Eli & Fur, building up momentum to the dancefloor-ready “Set My Mind” with a deeper bassline reminiscent of many nights out in which the first whiskey and coke is felt just enough to motivate the listener to move past their reticence and hit the dance floor. In “We Move In The Dark,” audiences are sure to groove to the fluid vocal accompaniment of Hendrick Burkhard and funky guitar riff. Following that, “Diamond Dust,” a soft beat leads into a symphony of strings and piano blending classical into electronic for an idiosyncratic sound that awes the percipient. The title track “Tuesday Maybe” is composed of an atmospheric melody, coupled with evocative vocals over a memorable synth riff that is maintained throughout the number leading into a danceable beat. It has been a favorite since its original release in early 2016, and marks the close of the album.

The house veterans of Way Out West once again entrance and mystify listeners with their release of this 5th studio album. The time and skilled effort spent on each fine-tuned track is truly evidenced in this release. Audiences are sure to appreciate the unique Way Out West sound marked by the creative incorporation of trance, techno, and classical elements that separate this from other House albums. Overall, on a scale of 1-10, I rate “Tuesday Maybe” an 8.

Washed out: Mister Mellow Album Review

0

Returning under the experimental hip hop record label Stone’s Throw, chillwave pioneer “Washed Out” released their third studio album “Mister Mellow”… and we think the title is just … perfect.Bust out the tin of zig zags and blotter paper. “Mister Mellow” is a press play album meant to be the soundtrack for your summer time trip.

Riddled with the lo-fi loops, strings, backwards recordings and the high reverb vocals everyone has come to love about Washed Out, the album transcends Ernest Greene’s past work by using a wide variety of beats, arrangements and influences while still maintaining their retro-electronic sound. Everything from latin cabana music to jazzy house to driving chillwave, Washed Out eloquently blends tried and true with far out influences.

The use of backwards recordings and one minute tracks as a transition between songs give a hint of a late Beatles sound. The vibe of the album is a true adventure, bringing you up and down with moments of ominous tension broken by sunshine rays of sound. This is an album you listen to when one finds oneself.

“Mister Mellow” gets 8 out of 10 chinchillas (Yes, that’s how we rate albums around here). Be sure to add Mister Mellow to your essential summer playlist and keep a look out for Washed Out on their “Get Lost” tour.

Women in EDM: In-Your-Face Producer Showcase

0

We talk a lot in this series about the lack of women producers in the electronic music industry. It’s a Catch-22 when it comes to bookings—artists get booked when they have larger followings, and artists get larger followings when they get booked. This month, we put our money where our mouths are and are highlighting some up and coming producers that you should know about, because their music kicks ass. Overseas and in certain scenes, these artist have no problem getting their names in the big fonts, but as we know, the U.S. is challenged with headlining women. The 5 featured artists below prove that there’s absolutely no reason why this should be a thing. Listen to their tracks and mixes, follow them online, get notified of their next show and give them the organic audience they deserve so you can see them on the next festival you’re itching to get passes to. Oh, and if you haven’t yet, go vote for women DJs/producers for the DJ Mag Top 100 NOW.

DJ AniMe

Whoever said girls are made of sugar and spice obviously hasn’t listen to the women producers of hardstyle. DJ AniMe’s style is about as in-your-face as you can get. Her track selection is metal AF, seemless, and utterly relentless. Hailing from Plaisance, Italy, she’s been in the game since 2008 and shows no signs of slowing down. Follow her tour dates, Facebook, and enjoy these sounds:

Whipped Cream

You think dubstep is a boy’s club? Eat your heart out and put some Whipped Cream on it. Representing the legacy of Canadian bass, Whipped Cream is proof that different perspectives are great for pushing creativity forward. Brostep made the bass world tired for a minute there, but Whipped Cream is digging bassheads out of the rut, one impeccably produced track at a time. Follow her tour dates, Twitter, and get a spoonful of this tasty EP:

Kim Ann Foxman

She’s the dark techno/electronica dream of Annie Lennox and Grace Jones combined, an artist through and through, and an absolute must-hear. She’s also the founder of Firehouse Records and the epitome of New York City cool. DO NOT sleep on her tour dates, and follow her Twitter now. Enjoy this Nasty Mix and a track from her Energy EP.

Madam X

She might be the master and commander of Manchester, according to her music. Madam X’s sound is pure UK underground, and damn, she produces and curates the hell out of it. She owns her own label, Kaizen, and has a big, bad ass career behind her and ahead of her. Stay on top of her tour dates (yo Dirtybird campers, she’ll be there this year), follow her Facebook, and listen to her label’s radio show, and enjoy a track from her Movements Vol. 1 EP.

Megan Hamilton

Oh. Hell. Yes. Bass and future funk producer Megan Hamilton surprisingly comes from Minneapolis, but her sound could be straight-up dirty south. Her sound is all about getting into a funky groove, inspiring dropped tops and some bounce to the ounce. Check out her 2017 promo mix and a pick from my personal collection.

Stay tuned for more producer showcases throughout the year. Cheers!
