In typical Houston fashion, Johnny Bund, aka “Lil Bund”, threw a party to remember June 29th, 2018. The eccentric event organizer partnered up with Andru Delgado, aka “DRU”, to celebrate their birthdays at the spacious and beautiful AYVA Center. The free event brought out both the old and new party people, and brought everyone together for a social night to remember.

Though we arrived too late to see them, we heard from those around us that the opening DJs Nilz and Mad Kadder started the night off strong. Apologies to those two, we will make an effort to see them play in the near future to make up for missing their sets.

The eleven o’clock hour was graced by the night’s only dip into drum & bass, which provided a refreshing switch in genres as the venue began to fill. The dancing crowd took front and center to break a sweat to Chambers’ delectable mix of dnb, jungle, and touch of bass music. He kept a steady level of energy, holding the dancing crowd’s attention while also allowing those in the back of the crowd plenty of space to converse and start socializing.

A local favorite took the stage at midnight, bringing out a set list heavy in house music. Steven Lawrence kept the crowd’s full attention the full hour with his fantastic music selection. With a dabble of old school house, shuffle-friendly electro house, and a few tracks that border-lined as bass music, he never let the audience lose focus and kept the atmosphere alive all the way until the birthday boy himself took over the decks.

DRU, as the birthday guest should, played as the headliner for the night. With free reign of the decks, he took advantage of his special day and seemingly played whatever genre came to mind. DRU delved into the depths of riddim and dubstep, but also sprinkled in some psytrance and hardstyle to keep the energy moving. By this point in the night, AYVA was packed and the atmosphere was electric. In every direction you could see a group of friends or strangers laughing together and moving to the music.

The Department of Dance’s own DJ Matthew Dunn was next up, bringing both his signature trance tracks and a mash of dubstep, psytrance, progressive house, and electro. The intense set was perfect for keeping the audience and vibe at its peak. Dunn also brought the night to a new level with his personal laser system that truly brought the visual production together. While we planned on staying later into the night, we unfortunately had to leave during Dunn’s set, so we apologize to him as well as Menace, the closing DJ, for not seeing the night all the way through.

Overall the night lived up to and exceeded the hype built up for the show. AYVA’s large space allowed a crowd of rowdy friends to come and celebrate the duo’s birthday in “over-the-top” fashion. As with each of Johnny’s shows in the past, this one cultivated a social and friendly atmosphere throughout the night, allowing new friendships to form and further developing a bond within the scene that keeps ravers coming back for more.
