I Made This For You
The Mixtape in 2016

During our interview with Plastik Funk (minute 2:03 in the video), we asked how they started their careers. Rafael Ximenez-Carrillo, one half of the funky duo, recounted a time when a friend brought him mixtapes of David Morales and Frankie Knuckles. A couple of days later, a house music dj was born and Rafael was buying vinyl at the local record store. The mixtapes sparked his interest in a DJ/producer career and would shape his sound from that moment on. Mixtapes are cemented in history as eye-openers and have played an important role in budding careers.

A mixtape was a cassette tape or CD created with music carefully selected for a special occasion or for the purpose of introducing a person to new music. Crafting a mixtape was personal and often a labor of love. Sometimes CDs wouldn’t burn correctly. Cassette players would destroy cassettes for what felt like no reason at all. Fortunately times have changed.

Technology has taken us to near instant recall of almost all known media.  Seriously, when you think about it, you can have your mobile device playing almost anything you can think of in a matter of minutes.  With that said…

What is your current way of sharing a mixtape? A Spotify playlist? A Youtube playlist? Or is this the death of the #mixtape? Answer in the comments or share your input on the Facebook page.
