Subreddit r/EDM has posted their top 100 DJs results, and the Department of Dance is here to break it down. Although most of the list is what we would expect given certain artists’ popularity within the scene, some results were actually quite surprising. As expected, DJs taking many of the top spots are those that are super popular on the radio right now, such as Martin Garrix, The Chainsmokers, and DJ Snake. It wasn’t a shocker that these people would make the list, but it is a bummer that these people are recognized over arguably more deserving artists, such as Carl Cox ranking #108 and Ilan Bluestone, at a shocking #337. It was somewhat surprising that Illenium ranked so high at number 8, but considering all of his viral remixes of mainstream artists’ work, it makes sense. Other newcomers who have made the list include GRiZ (#53), Louis the Child (#62), and San Holo (#65).
Astonishingly, many artists who have made DJ Magazine’s Top 100 list were not even on it! For example, Ferry Corsten, DVBBS, Nervo, Bassjackers and many more didn’t make the Top 100, and some weren’t even on the spreadsheet consisting of 425 DJs. This indicates how fickle popularity can be in the music industry, and how popularity doesn’t necessarily translate to success in that field. It will be interesting to see how this list compares to DJ Mag’s top 100 list for 2016, which will be announced during Amsterdam Dance Event on October 19th in Heineken Music Hall.
