Goodnight Sweet Prince …

I don’t even know where or how to begin.

I was floored when we lost Bowie earlier this year, but his struggle with cancer somehow seemed to prepare me mentally, at least in some small measure for that loss. When the news came over today of Prince’s death … my world stood still. The man was an utter and complete visionary. His music, and larger than life persona reached into the very core of so many of his fans, touched so many lives, there is literally no way to even begin to estimate the impact he’s had on music history. I could sit here and offer a canned brief history on the man, or even some of the highlights of his musical career. The fact of the matter is, none of it would even come close to doing justice to this iconic titan of the music world.

I remember the first time hearing him on the radio, but … it wasn’t until I saw Purple Rain and heard “The Beautiful Ones” that it finally “clicked” for me on more than a superficial pop music level. So today, as the entire world mourns the loss of one of the greatest musical minds we’ve known, as literally everyone who’s experienced his music makes a bee line to buy albums and make playlists for their own personal memorial, I leave you with this.

Prince, the man may have left us, but Prince the icon and pop demigod will live on forever, as will the legacy and gift of his music.

“Now cracks a noble heart. Good-night, sweet prince;
And flights of angels sing thee to thy rest.”
