When I first heard that there would be a daytime park party, I would have back flipped if I had the ability. Learning it was free and would come with free food while it lasted was an even bigger incentive to check this event out with my two daughters. I was elated to know that it would go late into the evening, allowing me plenty of time to get there and enjoy the event in the event of a delay by diaper blow out or a feeding. I started getting ready shortly before noon and I had the girls out of the house within two hours.
It didn’t take long at all to get to the park. I just took West Little York down to where I needed to start my turns and was there within 30 minutes. Finding the correct pavillion was a bit more difficult but we eventually wound our way to the back of the park where the party was located. I just followed my ears, listening for beats until they became unmistakable, just like old times.
There were a lot of people at the park and lots of children to watch out for as they ran across the road. I parked a ways down from the party, but it wasn’t so far that Sky tapped out on the walk. When I walked up, I could hear drum and bass coming from the grassy area near the pavillion.
Seeing as I had two kids with me, I couldn’t race off to say hello and go get some BBQ. I set up shop at a table and fed my oldest a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. After she got done eating, I was able to go up to the BBQ pit where my friend Greg (Dj El Nino) and his wife were manning the meats. I chose to get some pulled pork and some bread. To say it was delicious was an understatement. For those who were in a beef brisket kind of mood, that was available in additional to the good ‘ole American hot dog. The rest of the afternoon was spent enjoying the outdoors, beats, and friends I came across. My two year old was absolutely taken with my friend Sheena and they played for a good part of the day. The music fit the day and provided some much needed music therapy while keeping the girls entertained.
Quite a few other parents showed up, much to my delight. The kids ran around, kicked soccer balls, blew bubbles, danced, and didn’t seem at all out of their element. Why would they when surrounded by so many good vibes? I only caught two full sets before I had to leave. One was from Jason Rowe and the other was Kelly from SDC. Both brought the funk. I had a great time and look forward to more daytime park parties. Sun, good food, and good people made for a great weekend.
I was listening to electronic dance music without even knowing it when I was listening to Jock Jams in the 90s. Fast forward to my senior year in high school and I had discovered Fatboy Slim. I have been listening to edm ever since and love writing about new sounds, good sounds, and the music that makes us move.
