Houston is known for many things: sprawl, traffic, screw music, and its growing, diverse restaurant scene. With a population of 2.239 million people at the last count, there are a lot of hungry bellies and Houston is the place to satiate your hunger. After a night of dancing and cutting up the floor, sometimes you feel like having a bite to eat. There are numerous dining establishments to hit up that will offer quality food without making you question your life the next morning on the toilet. I surveyed my fellow party people to find out where they liked to eat before and after a long night of partying. The results are as follows:
MAI’S RESTAURANT
3403 Milam St. Houston, TX 77002
http://maishouston.com/
Open until 3:00 a.m. Monday through Thursday and until 4:00 a.m. Friday and Saturday, Mai’s is a spot you can pregame at and also hit up after a long night out. Local dj and scene personality Matt Powers recommends the Bánh mì and lettuce wraps.
ONION CREEK
3106 White Oak Dr, Houston, TX 77007
http://www.onioncreekcafe.com/
Open until 12:00 a.m. Monday through Wednesday and up until 2:00 a.m. Thursday through Sunday, Onion Creek is a long time favorite located in the Heights that serves up a good beer selection and casual eats with a twist.
RUCHI’S TAQUERIA
Several locations around town
http://ruchistaqueria.com/
Ruchi’s Taqueria has several locations in Houston, but the one I am most familiar with is 5201 Richmond Avenue. I would often dip in after a night at Stereo Live. Ruchi’s is open 24 hours and the Richmond location has free Wi-Fi.
KATZ’S DELI AND BAR
616 Westheimer Rd, Houston, TX 77006
http://ilovekatzs.com/
Once upon a time, when I was a wee lass in college at the University of Houston, Katz’s was the go-to spot for me as I lived close on campus and partied in the Westheimer/Montrose area fairly regularly back then. I could and still can count on Katz’s to serve up servers with personalities and good food late into the witching hours. The Yankee Pot Roast deli sandwich deserves an honorable mention. It’s like a home cooked meal in sandwich form. The crowd is always pleasant and if you are a people watcher, you will see a cross section of Houston when you come to Katz’s. I’ve never had a problem with seating here and have always had a good time with my dinner companions. A plus is the available parking across the street. Anyone who has traveled through the Westheimer/Montrose area knows all too well the headache of finding parking when you need it, so to have it readily available across the street is a plus.
PHO SAIGON VIETNAMESE NOODLE HOUSE
4 locations in houston
http://www.phosaigonnoodlehouse.com/
Pho Saigon closes before 10:00 p.m. so this would be a good place to dip in before a show and get a bowl of hot pho.
DOT COFFEE SHOP
7006 I-45 South at Woodridge
Houston, TX 77087
http://www.pappas.com/restaurants/dot-coffee-shop/
An alternative to Denny’s and Ihop, Dot Coffee Shop is open 24 hours and serves breakfast around the clock. You can also get Southern comfort foods here.
WHATABURGER
Many locations around town
http://whataburger.com/
Last but not least is Whataburger, a texas favorite. Fast food need not mean settling for substandard fare. Whataburger is a place where you’re happy to wait in line with other Whataburger fans as you soak in post-party glory. Whatabuger popped up repeatedly in responses to this survey, so I couldn’t leave it out. Whataburger can be found throughout the Greater Houston area and beyond. They are open 24 hours so you don’t ever have to be denied a patty melt.
I was listening to electronic dance music without even knowing it when I was listening to Jock Jams in the 90s. Fast forward to my senior year in high school and I had discovered Fatboy Slim. I have been listening to edm ever since and love writing about new sounds, good sounds, and the music that makes us move.
