ADE Day 1 Recap: Daytime 10/14/15

Now that the haze has lifted and our jet lag is just a memory, it’s time to write some recaps!

We started our first day at the conference hunting for a place that was open at a decent hour to pick up our conference packet.  We knew it was going to be close, most of the packet pick up venues opened at 10, and our first lecture of the day started at 11.  After tramming across the city, ogling at Centraal Station, and then chasing birds on the way to the Art ‘Otel for packet pickup, we were running way behind schedule.  By the time we picked up our packets and made it over to De Balie to check out the Value of Video Recording, the talk was very full and we were rejected at the door.  We sulked for a moment, but then headed over to de Brakke Grond to check out some gear and a quick product demo by Pioneer, Rekordbox that ended up being entirely in Dutch.  We hopped around the corner to glance briefly at the playground demo area, which featured products from Roli, Novation, Bitwig, and more that we will talk about later.  We dropped into the YouTube vault next, where we learned how to do more with YouTube than just place ads on your videos.  Did you know that you can link your video to things on your website with cards?  Did you know there are different levels of monetization on YouTube videos?  This was an interesting talk in a cool, quiet basement venue.

After a while, we headed to the bustling Dylan Hotel for a talk about taxes.  Boring perhaps?  Not when it’s moderated by the hilarious and surly Dave Clark.  However, it was interesting to note that if you work/DJ in several countries, then you might have to pay and file taxes in each of those countries!  Since we were jet lagged, we headed off for some sightseeing and dinner at the fabulous FEBO in Leidsplein, and then went back to the apartment to get ready for the evening.
