It was only fitting that Eric Prydz played in Houston on a Sunday night, because it can only be compared to something heavenly or divine. The man is considered a god in this industry and on Sunday, February 15, he took Houston to church.
The night started out great, as Albert Fix opened up the dance floor. A Stereo Live staple, Albert got the floor grooving from the beginning. As the crowd started arriving, it was apparent that the Who’s Who of the Houston electronic music scene were out in full force, as I recall seeing damn near everybody I can think of there that night. Despite the event being on a Sunday night, Stereo was packed, and with good reason. Since it has been sometime since Prydz has been back to Houston, his fans were ready, and Prydz did not disappoint.
Often times in the scene, you will hear people talk about a set being a journey and that was exactly what Prydz did. He took the crowd on an amazing, groovy, and visceral three-hour trip, complete with his signature sound and fantastic visuals. He commanded that dance floor in a way that I haven’t seen in sometime. There were no countdowns, nobody telling you when to jump. Just driving, thumping, body moving beats that were pulsating throughout the Stereo Live building creating a palpable vibe.
A couple of standout moments for me where when he played his remix of Depeche Mode’s “Personal Jesus.” Honestly, that song is just a fantastic track on its own. Then, when Prydz puts his touch on it, it becomes this epic rally cry to get your ass to the dance floor. His remix of New Order’s “Blue Monday,” was also memorable as it is another one of those tunes, that when properly placed within a set, can just set everything off. I also really got down to his new track “Generate, “ as it was hard hitting and beautiful.
Seeing Prydz live is definitely a game changer. He is everything you hear about and so much more. Prydz continues to put on marathon dance parties were crowds actually dances and everyone feels like they are a part of something bigger than themselves. He is a living legend and if you ever get the chance to check him out, do it. He is without a doubt a bucket list performer, and I am so glad that I am able to check him off my list.
As usual, it was my pleasure to cover this event for the Department of Dance. Have a good weekend, and go out and dance! XOXO-Angel
