A Night in the Fast Lane

Friday, December 26, I had the pleasure of attending the Lane 8 show at Boondocks in Houston, Texas. Daniel Goldstein, aka Lane 8, is an American house producer who made his record label debut via London’s Anjunadeep with the single “Be Mine.” The first time I was introduced to Lane 8 was through his guest appearance on Above and Beyond’s Group Therapy Episode 063. I fell in love with his use of soft vocals and bouncy bass. Last month, he produced a mix on Anjunadeep edition 28 which convinced me that I just could not miss this show.

When I heard that Lane 8, one of my favorite up and coming deep house producers, was booked in Houston, I was puzzled by which promotion company in Houston had landed this amazing booking. The show was thrown by Kinda Super Disco, an organization on a mission “to bring the coolest sound and artists in dance music every last Friday of the month”, (as stated by their Facebook description). Kinda Super Disco was founded in 2012 by local Houston DJs Josh Dupont and James Reed. This was my first time at a primarily House show in Houston. The only other House show I had been to was a Dirty Bird show in Las Vegas, so you could say I had high expectations for how it should be.
Upon arrival at Boondocks, I noticed that there was a very long line. It was pleasing to see so many people attend what I would consider a “low key” show. As expected, James Reed and Josh Dupont opened for Lane 8. I was eager to see them open because I love supporting the local Houston DJ/Producers. As they performed, I was able to sense their enthusiasm and passion for the music they played in each of their performances as they smiled and waved their hands gracefully to each down beat. When I looked around me, I was ecstatic to feel the energy from the crowd and their synchronized bouncing to each groovy beat. I suddenly felt the connection to the music that I felt had been lost in many shows I have attended recently.

Finally, it was time for Lane 8. I noticed exactly the moment he started his first track by his unique lyrical flavor mixed with whimsical house drops. He definitely took his crowd on a journey to House heaven as he dropped his original tunes and remixes such as “Nothing You Can Say” and “The One.” I slid past the crowded, sweaty audience to make my way to the very front. One of my favorite things to do at shows is watch the performer’s face during the act, because I enjoy reading their expressions to feel their passion for their craft. As I glanced at Lane 8, his eyes momentarily closed. His head bounced to the beat while his hands were hard at work picking the new track. I could definitely feel the passion not only in the music he played, but the crowd’s energetic response.

Overall, I would deem this show very successful and entertaining. It was definitely a hot spot for individuals appreciative of “low-key” events that like to support talented up and comers, as well as local DJs and producers. I was very pleased with Boondocks as a venue, and Kinda Super Disco’s promotion skills. Check out the following links for pictures/tracks to Lane 8. Feel free to leave some love on you felt about this show as well!
