Last Friday (Nov. 14th) I had the pleasure of attending “Elektrified 11” at Limelight which is part of the Limelight Electric Friday’s series. Because this was my first time attending a local show at Limelight, I was excited to compare the overall production and vibes that this venue has to offer. I arrived fairly early, but, to my surprise, the venue filled up continuously the whole night. Only two of the three rooms were set up that night: the main room and the red room.

Talent on the main stage included Houston newcomer and local DJ, Ryan Reeves, opening the decks as well as many well-known Houston favorites, such as Matthew Dunn, Wes Walz, Poe Junior, and Monstar. Visiting all the way from San Diego, California, was special guest G-Roy, dropping super funky house beats. Unusual for an opening set, Ryan Reeves opened with some hard hitting numbers, setting the energy a bit high for such an early slot for the night. Taking over after Reeves was one of Houston’s top tier local DJs, Wes Walz. Unsurprisingly, he did not disappoint, and once again showed why he is one of the favorite DJ’s of the local scene. Next up was Matthew Dunn, AKA Houston’s “Trance Wizard”. Although Dunn didn’t bring his signature trance sound to the dance floor that evening, his set was definitely my favorite of the night. I’ve been to many of his shows in the past and have always had a blast, but I was amazed at his track selection, mostly consisting of electro and big room style progressive house, and how the crowd responded to his tracks. I was in the middle of the crowd dancing and feeding off of the energy of shufflers around me, when I looked behind my back to see five girls dancing in one cage!

Feeling energized from the Main Room sound, I was happy to chill out in the Red Room. As soon as I wandered into the upstairs side area, I was welcomed with a red haze and super deep bass drops to match. The Red Room was filled with hard bass lines and dubstep tracks, thanks to the local talents of Tim VZ, Guilty Spark, Scott Michael , and Yetti. The contrast of energy and beats between the two rooms really complemented each other, in my opinion. Also, it was my first time hearing these four DJs and I can say confidently that I was impressed.

Overall, I thought it was a successful night. The talent of Houston DJ’s always impresses and manages to surprise me. I encourage you to support the local scene as much as possible in your city, wherever that may be.
