Killer Fro needs Mo’ … DJing that is

After a long day of fun in the sun and house music at Houston’s premier house fiesta known as Praia Urbana (see the DoD review of that here), I decided to go check out some bass music offerings at Stereo Live. The night consisted of 2 acts I have yet to see and barely know anything about, Kill Paris with guest opener Candyland.

I’m not sure what sugar induced diabetes party caused the group Candyland to earn their title or their place as a main stage act, because they were anything but sweet. The Stereo Live crowd response is always loving and accepting when it comes to heavy bass drops and high pitched dutch stabbs layered with Dubstep, but from this DJ’s perspective, I noticed an odd silence in between mixing and transitioning tracks from the duo. It didn’t really sound like much “DJing” was going on at all. Everything was all drop and build up with no music in between. I found myself scratching my head more than once trying to figure out if I was just “missing” something, or if in fact they weren’t even really mixing, just pressing play and fading out between songs.

Kill Paris on the other hand delivered a stellar set with groovy bass tones and sexy sounds. He’s a solid DJ but not much of a crowd pleaser for Stereo live. Although i was impressed, his sound reminded me of something more akin to “baby making music”.

I do have to say the local DJ’s on the terrace seemed to “fill the gap” of what was missing in the main room. Houston locals always bring it for the crowd and 2t0ne (a.k.a. Anthony Morello) closing out the night  was no exception. His closing set on the terrace could not have been more perfect for guiding the crowd from Deep house to funky Electro.
