Dear America, It’s Not The End

Today Americans across the country will go to their polling place and cast votes that will determine the direction of the country for the next four years. This election cycle has been one wrought with tension and has brought people to the brink of mental exhaustion. It’s understandable to have reservations about what tomorrow will bring. It’s easy to forget that before several individuals began their race to be elected to the highest office in the United States of America, we were all joined together in a community that spits in the face of division.

The electronic dance community is one of the most diverse there is. People from different walks of life come together to give themselves to the dancefloor. One of the things that is so appealing about the electronic dance music scene is that you can be yourself and be free to love life as you see fit, to express yourself how you see fit. When you lace up those shoes and dance to your heart’s content, nothing matters but the beat driving your feet. The people next to you aren’t your enemy, even if they voted differently. No matter who ascends to the White House, it’s not the end. We’re all in this together.

Love is what the world needs more of, not partisan nitpicking and disagreements. Our community is a special one, for where else can you witness scenes such as the one below at Bill Graham Civic Auditorium earlier this year in San Francisco?

PLUR (Peace, Love, Unity, Respect) has been an acronym that has long defined our community. If we give way to our more base urges and let ourselves be fractured, this country, this world we inhabit will be worse off. I am reminded of the great potential we have as a species whenever I see videos of people letting loose and having fun. Below is a video shot by Carlo Spaziani that was taken in Central Park in New York. Watch as children and adults like move their bodies to the undeniable rhythm of house music. This is who we are and who we can continue to be.

This is going to be a very long day. We’re all going to be held in suspense long after the polling places close. It’s important to not forget who we are in the process. Take a deep breath and journey back in time to Eric Prydz’s opening number at Euphoria Music Festival earlier this year. Here people are one in their love and in their passion for one of the most positive forces in the world: electronic dance music.

I was listening to electronic dance music without even knowing it when I was listening to Jock Jams in the 90s. Fast forward to my senior year in high school and I had discovered Fatboy Slim. I have been listening to edm ever since and love writing about new sounds, good sounds, and the music that makes us move.
